The company started operations by developing real estate mostly within Dhaka, the capital of the country.

Eastern Housing Limited (the “company”), was incorporated in 1964 as a Private Limited Company under the Companies Act, 1913. In 1993 the company registered itself with Registrar of Joint Stock Companies and Firms (RJSC) as a Public Limited Company and is one of the largest Real Estate Company in the private sector. The company raised its capital by way of  subscribed IPO of shares and debentures through a prospectus issued in July, 1994.

The company is the pioneer as well as the only Public Limited Company in the country in Real Estate Business under the private sector. It was formed under the leadership of Mr. Jahurul Islam to reduce the housing problems of Dhaka city. It started its work by successfully implementing a project of building 700 houses in Pallabi Thana, Dhaka, and acquiring 910 acres (3.68 square kilometers) of land. It was the first to provide low-cost housing to the residents of Bangladesh (then East Pakistan). Within a short span of time it turned out to be one of the most trusted companies in the housing sector.

The company is involved in developing both residential and commercial properties  including shops, showrooms, office buildings and apartments. It is also one of the leading companies involved in selling plots of land by providing a total infrastructure including electricity, sewerage, gas, water etc. EHL has also done projects outside of Dhaka.

Jahurul Islam

Jahurul Islam (1928-1995) businessman, entrepreneur and social activist was born in Bhagalpur village of Bajitpur thana under Kishoreganj district on August 01, 1928.

Jahurul Islam began his career as a first class contractor. He established Bengal Development Corporation (BDC) which over time grew into a great construction company. He could foresee the housing problem in Dhaka in near future as a result of its very fast population growth and urbanization and development spree and in 1964 he established the first real estate organization in the country namely Eastern Housing Ltd. Till 2022,  Eastern Housing Limited has built more than 6200 residential and 4800 commercial units. In addition to that, EHL has developed more than 2100 Acres of land in the housing arena.

Later He established ‘ Islam Group’. Since then Islam Group has diverged into multidimensional sectors including engineering, construction, trading and manufacture. The group, over the years, concentrated in other sectors including pharmaceuticals, real estate, finance, construction and agricultural sector.

Through the variety of his concerns, Jahurul Islam has shown diversified thinking capability that no one in his generation possessed. His unique farsightedness has paved the way not only for real estate but for industrial development in Bangladesh.

Besides being good businessman, he was also a humanitarian. He founded Jahurul Islam Medical College and Hospital (JIMCH), for the betterment of the country. Although the institute officially began in 1992, the hospital service started as early as 1989. It had huge capacity of holding patients, more than 500 beds with both emergency and normal hospital facilities; no kind of injury was ever rejected for treatment. Modern and intensive case has been offered ever since its establishment. Jahurul Islam Medical College has also earned foreign reputation by admitting approximately 30 students every year. Till 2022, Jahurul Islam Medical College and Hospital Bangladesh has served more than 7.6 Million patients.

Jahurul Islam died on 19 October 1995 in Singapore. He was buried at his village home, Bhagalpur. He is survived by a son and four daughters. At present, his son Manzurul Islam is the Chairman of Islam Group, the consortium of enterprises founded and nourished by Jahurul Islam.
